A Logical Time T he s ta te ’s activities will be so crow ded even w ith the new sta te capitol building th a t m ore land and m ore buildings w ill be needed im m ediately. It seem s a sad m istake th a t action to pu rch ase th e W il lam ette university site or th e fo u r blocks to the no rth of th e p resent cap ito l w as not u n d e rta k en at th e special legislative ses sion in 1935 to consider rep la cin g th e his toric old capitol stru c tu re th a t burned. It w ould seem logical an d businesslike to proceed w ith pu rch ase now as su g gested by S en ato r D uncan of Burns r a th e r th a n to w ait until p ro p erty values in crease still m ore. As th e y ears go on these values will increase by reason of m ore expensive construction etc., in th e vicinity of th e capitol. T he sta te is now faced w ith th e im m ediate need of a new building to house th e s ta te lib rary , w hich furnishes one of th e m ost constructive and w orthw hile services in th e s ta te today. B eneficiaries of th e lib ra ry are in every nook a n d cor n er of th e sta te . T he cost of this fin e o r g anization. w hich h as been w orking u n d e r terrib ly c ram p ed conditions fo r years, w as only five cents p e r c a p ita la s t y ear. The a n n u al re p o rt of th e s ta te lib ra ria n fittin g ly pointed out th a t o th e r five-cent p u rch ases w ere a 5-cent cigar, an ice cream cone, a chocolate bar, p a c k ag e of chew ing gum and a th ird of a p a c k ag e of cig arettes. T he needs of th e sta te m ust even tu ally be ta k e n c a re of. It w ould seem th a t now w ould be th e business-like tim e to p ro ceed before costs increase and w hile it is possible to secure g ran ts from th e fe d eral governm ent to cover a larg e sh a re of th e cost. One visit to th e sta te lib ra ry , now housed in one c o rn e r of th e suprem e c o u rt building, will convince anyone of t h e needs of th a t org an izatio n , w hile a check of th e lib ra ria n ’s re p o rt will c le a rly prove th e ju stifica tio n o f such a service to th e sta te an d its people. A Splendid School T he nu rsery school being conducted a t th e D avid H ill school fo r ch ild ren from 2 to 5 y ears is a sp lendid fe a tu re fo r th e com m unity. H illsboro is fo rtu n a te indeed in being one of th e few cities in th e sta te to be d esig n ated fo r such a school and the su p p o rt of all o rg an izatio n s and in divid uals should be acco rd ed in o rd e r th a t it be m ain tain ed here. A tra in in g is av ailable th ro u g h th e m edium of th is nu rsery school th a t is beneficial to ch ild ren com ing from all types of homes. Stabilizing Influence F a rm e rs ’ org an izatio n s in W ashington county and o th e r p a rts of th e sta te are voicing th e ir a p p ro v al of th e O regon m ilk control b o a rd in no u n certain term s and a re opposing any am endm ents to th e act. T he b o ard has been a stab ilizin g influence in th e d airy in d u stry and it should unques tio n ab ly have th e backing of farm groups and also of legislators, who come from d airy sections. T he crim inal syndicalism law , re p e a l of w hich w as revived by re c e n t decision of th e U. S. suprem e co u rt rev ersin g th e con viction of D irk D eJonge of P o r t l a n d , should not be rep e a le d as co n tem p lated by some legislators.
